Some of us would prefer to go for a tone on tone look, however there is a way of achieving this without using the same patterns of the tie and pocket square. The way to approach this is to select matching base colours of both tie and pocket square. The great thing about this, is that it does not have to match exactly. It can be a shade lighter or darker.
The patterns itself are not matching (of course) but they complement each other because of the small hints of colours that do match such as the black motif on tie with the black outline on pocket square. Further more the mustard yellow in the pocket square tonally complement the bold yellow in the tie's design.
I hope this helps and inspires you to explore the many possibilities on your tie and pocket square styling.
